World intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Statistical Report on Trademark Registrations in Indonesia

A&CO Law Office Indonesia

In the fast-paced world of intellectual property, trademarks serve as crucial identifiers, distinguishing products, and services in the bustling marketplace. By exploring the statistical report on trademark registrations in Indonesia, released by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) as of December 2023, <https://www.wipo.int/edocs/statistics-country-profile/en/id.pdf>,  we gain valuable insights into the nation's changing commercial landscape. WIPO has published statistical reports on Indonesia's intellectual property applications, spanning from 2013 to 2022, which provide comprehensive data and analysis. These insights help illuminate the evolving trends and dynamics within Indonesia's commercial environment.

Trends

For 2022, Indonesia witnessed a surge in trademark registrations, marking a milestone in the nation's intellectual property journey. With an increase of 15,992 applications from the previous year, reaching a total of 113,162 applications by the end of 2022, this rise underscores the growing awareness within the Indonesian community regarding trademarks as valuable assets. Furthermore, this growth reflects Indonesia's burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit and its dedication to fostering innovation.

Domestic vs. International Application

Domestic trademark filings by Indonesian residents reached 107,543 applications, while abroad filings stood at 5,619. Notably, China emerged as a destination country for Indonesian residents, by having 19.1% of applications to the China Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). This surge in applications positions Indonesia 30th globally in terms of trademark filings for 2022. On the international front, 32,863 applications were filed by non-residents in Indonesia. The top countries of origin for these non-resident filings were China, the United States of America, Japan, Singapore, and the Republic of Korea. However, this figure represents a decrease of 8.1% compared to the previous year.

Sectoral Insights

The trademark landscape mirrors the diverse array of industries it represents. In 2022, certain sectors emerged as frontrunners in trademark registrations. Notably, the food and beverage (F&B) sectors, encompassing coffee, tea, and food, dominated the Nice Classification for applications, by having 11.9% of total applications, followed closely by non-medicated cosmetics. This trend reflects the popularity of the F&B industry and cosmetics in Indonesia in recent years.

Key Players in Trademark Filing

Behind each trademark registration lies a narrative of innovation and enterprise. Notable players in trademark filings from 2020 to 2022 include PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa, PT Surya Dermato Medica Laboratories, PT Tembakau Djajasakti SARL, PT Siantar Top Tbk, and PT Konimex. Their proactive approach underscores the strategic importance of trademark protection in safeguarding intellectual assets and maintaining competitiveness in the market.

In conclusion, the WIPO's statistical report on trademark registrations in Indonesia for 2022 offers a thorough overview of the country's trademark scene. It highlights trends, insights, and potential opportunities that influence the future of intellectual property in the region. While the 2023 report from WIPO hasn't been released yet (expected later this year), based on the growing economy, and increasing awareness, we anticipate that Indonesia's position in the trademark domain is also improving. This suggests a potential rise in Indonesia's global ranking in this aspect.
