China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) has released the IP statistics of the first half of 2020 and the details are provided herein for your information.
On July 9, 2020, CNIPA held a regular press conference for the 3rd quarter of 2020 in Beijing, centrally publishing the semi-annual statistics of patents, trademarks, geographical indications, and layout design of integrated circuits, as well as the IP development trends and progress of China embodied in these statistics.
The statistics shows that in the first half of 2020, China's major intellectual property indicators were in line with development expectations, and the comprehensive strength of intellectual property rights has been steadily enhanced.
In the first half of 2020, the number of invention patent applications in China was 683,000; a total of 217,000 invention patents were granted. In particular, 176,000 domestic invention patents were granted, 169,000 of which were the service inventions, accounting for 96.0%, and 7,000 were the non-service invention, accounting for 4.0%. In the first half of the year, the top 3 enterprises in China (Mainland China only) with the most granted invention patents in order were: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (2,772), OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. (1,925) and BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (1,432).
As of the end of June 2020, the number of domestic invention patent ownership (Mainland China only) reached 1.996 million, and the number of invention patents per 10,000 people was 14.3. The top 3 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) with the most invention patents per 10,000 people in order were: Beijing (141.5), Shanghai (56.1), and Jiangsu Province (31.9).
In the first half of 2020, the CNIPA accepted 29,500 international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in total, up by 22.6% year on year, 26,800 of which were domestic applications, increasing by 20.7% year-on-year. In the first half of the year, the top 3 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) that received the most PCT applications, in turn, were: Guangdong Province (10,900), Beijing (3,800), and Jiangsu Province (3,300).
In the first half of 2020, a total of 26,200 reexamination requests were accepted; 25,700 cases were closed. 2,600 invalidation requests were accepted; 4,300 cases were closed.
In the first half of 2020, the examination period for invention patent was 20.3 months, and that for high-value patent was 15.2 months, utility model was 6.4 months and design was 3.2 months.
In the first half of 2020, the number of trademark applications in China was 4.284 million; the amount of trademark registration was 2.629 million. As of the end of June, the number of valid trademark registrations in China was 27.414 million.
In the past half year, a total of 166,000 trademark review cases were received, and 192,000 cases were closed. The number of applications for the Madrid International Registration of Marks from China was 3,875, with a year-on-year increase of 36.0%. As of the end of June 2019, the number of valid applications for the Madrid International Registration of Marks from China has reached 41,000.
In the first half of 2020, the average examination period for trademark registration was shortened to less than 4.5 months.
For geographical indication:
In the first half of 2020, China approved and registered 364 geographical indication trademarks, and 322 enterprises were approved to use the geographical indications. By the end of June 2020, 5,682 geographical indication trademarks have been registered; 2,385 products have been approved to be protected by geographical indication; 8,811 enterprises have been approved to use geographical indication.
For the layout designs of integrated circuit:
In the past 6 months, a total of 5,176 registration applications for the layout designs of integrated circuit were received, with a year-on-year increase of 78.2%; 5,262 certificates were issued, increasing by 111.6% year over year. For the protection and utilization of intellectual property rights: In the first half of 2020, the total number of patent infringement dispute administrative adjudications cases was 5,320.
The pledged financing amount for patents and trademarks nationwide totaled 85.3 billion yuan, increasing by 45% year over year, and the number of pledge projects was 4,678, with a year-on-year growth of 52%, among which, the amount of patent pledge financing was 65.1 billion yuan increasing by 61% year over year with 4,171 pledge projects increasing by 54% year over year, and the amount of trademark pledge financing was 20.2 billion yuan increasing by 8.8% year over year with 507 pledge projects increasing by 34% year over year.
